What marked all three of these tales was Conrad’s somewhat unconventional narrative style, with the latter two being told largely in the form of a first person narrator being told a story, so it’s as if we are getting the stories almost third hand. Youth: A Narrative then introduces us to a man named Marlow who is to become our protagonist in Heart Of Darkness as he recounts to our narrator the tale of his first voyage to the ‘East Indies’ and all the mishaps that befell the ship he was on as it went. Karain: A Memory takes us to the area around Malaysia and Indonesia and sees our narrator, an officer of some description on a trading ship, encounter a tribal chief of some renown who recounts his story to the officer and his contemporaries that makes them think far more on their views of different races than they had previously.
